My story
A few years ago, I got diagnosed with ADHD. Like a lot of people who get diagnosed as adults, it explained things I'd spent years quietly blaming myself for, including the parking fines I kept forgetting to deal with.
It never started as a big deal. A ticket would land, I'd mean to sort it, and then I just… wouldn't. Life got in the way, or my brain simply dropped it. By the time I remembered, the deadline had passed and the fine had gone up. Then another. Then another. What should have been small, manageable amounts snowballed into genuinely scary numbers.
Every appeal I looked into gave me different advice. Some cases went all the way to the courts. Then the bailiff letters started arriving, and I had no idea what my rights actually were, what I could challenge, or what I had to just accept.
I went to Citizens Advice hoping someone could finally give me a clear answer. I left with less clarity than I walked in with. I felt completely lost, like I was the only person on earth who had to untangle this, entirely by myself, with no guide and no map.
So I did the only thing left: I researched it all myself. Every stage, every deadline, every appeal route, every piece of legal wording, for council PCNs, for private parking charges, for TEC applications, for bailiff enforcement. It took me months. It was exhausting, confusing, and honestly one of the most stressful things I've been through.
And somewhere in the middle of all that research, I realised: nobody should have to go through this the way I did.
The diagnosis
